Should You Repair or Replace Your Garage Door?

Short answer: Repair is usually cheaper. National cost surveys put most repairs at about $155 to $379, while a new door for a one-car garage starts around $500 and can cost much more. Replace the door when it's badly damaged, keeps breaking, has several worn-out parts or is warped. In Cameron County, also think about wind: a new door goes through the windstorm inspection if you have TWIA coverage.

Most garage door calls end with a repair, not a new door. But there's a point where fixing an old door again is money you won't get back. Here's how to tell which side of that line you're on.

Start with what broke

Problem Usually
Broken spring Repair
Snapped or loose cable Repair
Worn rollers or noisy hinges Repair
Bent track Repair, unless the bend is severe
Opener not working Repair the opener, or replace just the opener
One dented panel Repair, if a matching panel is still made
Several damaged panels Often replace
Warped or rotting door Replace
Door damaged in a storm Depends on the damage. Ask about the windstorm inspection if you have TWIA

When a repair makes sense

  • One part failed and the rest of the door is in good shape.
  • The door is solid, seals well and runs straight once the part is fixed.
  • Parts are easy to find for your door.

Cost surveys say most repairs land between $155 and $379, with springs at $180 to $350 and cables at $100 to $400. Compared with a new door, that's a small bill.

When a new door makes sense

  • Several panels are dented, cracked or rusted through.
  • Replacement panels aren't available, so a fix would leave a door that doesn't match.
  • The door needs repairs again and again. HomeAdvisor's guide notes that a door needing frequent service or with several failing parts often costs less to replace in the long run.
  • The door is warped and won't close evenly.
  • You want a door built for stronger wind, before hurricane season or for your insurance.

What each option costs

Option Typical national cost
Most repairs $155 – $379
New door, one-car garage (8–12 ft) $500 – $2,500
New single door, two-car garage (12–18 ft) $800 – $4,000

Custom and specialty doors can cost much more. Removing the old door and a new opener may be extra. More in garage door repair cost in the RGV.

How old is your door?

Cost surveys say most garage doors last 15 to 30 years, and steel doors about 15 to 20. Age alone isn't a reason to replace a door that works well. But an old door that also needs a big repair is a good time to compare both prices.

The Cameron County factor: wind

Brownsville, Harlingen and the rest of Cameron County are inside the area covered by the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA). If you have TWIA coverage, or may want it:

  • A new garage door needs to be part of a windstorm inspection by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). Garage door replacement isn't on TDI's list of repairs that skip the inspection.
  • TDI's garage door brochure calls the garage door a weak spot in hurricanes and says garage door failures were behind 80% of home failures in recent hurricanes.

That doesn't mean every older door must go. It means that if you're replacing the door anyway, it's worth asking the provider about wind-rated options and how the inspection will be handled. See garage doors and hurricanes in Cameron County.

Questions to ask the provider

  • What exactly is broken, and what will the repair cost?
  • Is the rest of the door in good shape?
  • Are replacement parts available for this door?
  • If I replace it, what are my options, and what would each cost installed?
  • If I have TWIA coverage, how will the windstorm inspection be handled?

The Texas Department of Insurance suggests getting three written estimates for garage door work.
